By The Numbers: What My Arabic Lessons With italki Look Like After 6 Weeks At the beginning of December, I began a 3 month project with the language learning site italki with the goal to be conversationally fluent in Arabic. Having now completed a third of the way, here are the raw numbers on my progress and what I’ve learned so far. 19: Number Of Course Hours I’m taking roughly 5 hours of lessons a week, once per weekday. (I’ve tried two hours sessions but after 60 minutes I begin to lose focus.) 100%: Percentage Of Arabic Script I Can Read And Write Although it was intimidating at first, I can comfortably read Arabic script as well as write by phonetically sounding out words. 2: Number Of Instructors I spent some time trying out several teachers to get an idea of styles as well as evaluate which might be the best fit for me personally. I eventually fell into a good routine with two particular instructors whose structured lesson plans I’m benefiting from greatly. 1910: italki Credits Used That would be the equivalent of about $190 for courses so far. Although every instructor sets their own rates, almost all seem to fall into the 120 italki credit (~$12 USD) range. Here’s a bit more on how italki works  exactly. At Least 100: Words Learned This one’s hard to quantify but it has to be at least one hundred, not including various common phrases as well. Where I’m At Right Now At this point I can conjugate verbs in the past tense from memory and know many of these essential travel word combinations. In a relatively short time, I’ve picked up the structure of Arabic: the rules and grammar which make the language work. Early on I wasn’t sure if laying down this foundation first (prior to speaking skills) would be efficient but the thorough italki instructors have proved me otherwise. I’ll keep you updated with my weekly progress. Character analysis could be especially difficult if the novel were written in a different vernacular or period where students have to concentrate on decoding the sentences before they can learn about the thoughts and feelings of the characters. Author bio and context Most students dont think about learning about the authors biography or the context of the time in which the book was written. Underlying themes and symbols Another good thing for students to study is the many underline symbols, motifs, and themes found within high school literature. Maybe, in these days of everyone the same, some males wish to stand out by not following popular trends.Maybe they're afraid of needles... ALL types of needles, e ven those sticking out of a pincushion!Wouldn't that be a crazy reason to avoid such a relaxing, potentially lucrative opportunity to learn sewing techniques?Some of the biggest names of clothing, male names â€" as we will discuss in a moment, didn't learn to thread needles at their grandmothers' knees.They learned their technique through sewing tutorials and, while some have never taken more than one sewing class, they are still giants of the garment industry.Another trend that points to a revival of learning how to sew: sales of Singer, Brother and Bernina sewing machines.At the turn of the century, consumers buying sewing tools and sewing supplies tended to be golden-agers (and female).Today, we see middle-agers, people in their thirties and forties, of all genders, haunting the sewing notion counter, buying fabric and patterns for their beginner sewing projects.Even adolescents are looking for free sewing patterns, claiming their status as beginners in the world of home sewing.E ager as they are to get started, they still look for sewing tips â€" even online, before they start on their project.Back to the topic of the sewing machine, now...A quality appliance today is:portableefficientmulti-functionalaffordableLong gone are the days of freestanding implements with treadles and long belts!Machines that operate on either alternating or direct current, or are driven by constant flexing and stretching of your foot - giving a whole new meaning to pressing and presser foot!Appliances that require the purchase of an additional accessory to buttonhole, and couldn't do much besides bob its needle up and down, into the bobbin case.The machine of today can embroider, baste... execute all manner of stitching!Whip stitch and slip stitch, straight stitch and back stitch: they are nothing to create when interfacing with even a basic sewing machine.Thanks to lower cost, and perhaps because the best sewing machine available today is computerized, youths, so adept with techn ology, are sewing seams like never before!Do you know what an overcast stitch is? French Grammar Rules Conjugating Regular Verbs in the Imparfait Suzy S. The French language uses several different verb forms to talk about events that occurred in the past. French tutor Carol Beth L. shares her guide to one of those forms, the imparfait So, perhaps youve learned how to use the passé composé to talk about events in the past tense. The passé composé is a good way to discuss single events that happened once or at a specific point in time. Jai passé deux ans en France. I spent two years in France. Elle a fait ses devoirs hier. She did her homework yesterday. Tu as mangé une banane. You ate a banana. But what do you do about the following situations? Events or happenings that are happening when something else takes place. Ex: While she was doing her homework, her friend called on the telephone. Ex: While I was finishing my masters degree in France, Michael Jackson died. Ex: While you were eating a banana, you burst out laughing. Descriptions of events or situations that were repeated or that happened over a long period of time. Ex: When he was a middle-schooler, he swam every day. Ex: They visited Japan every year when he was young. Situations or states of being in the past. Ex: The door of the house was purple. Ex: Eloise was an intelligent girl. These situations contain verbs for which the passé composé  doesnt quite fit. Instead, French grammar uses a verb form called the imparfait. For regular verbs, there is a quite regular pattern to form the imparfait. Remove the -er, -ir, and -re endings, and add the endings in bold: aimer finir rendre j aimais   je finissais je rendais tu aimais   tu finissais   tu rendais il / elle / on aimait   il / elle / on finissait   il rendait nous aimions   nous finissions   nous rendions vous aimiez   vous finissiez   vous rendiez ils / elles aimaient   ils / elles finissaient   ils rendaient The endings used for the -er and -re forms are also pretty consistent across most irregular verbs, as long as you know the root that is used. For example, for être, the root for the imparfait is et-. So the imperfect for être would be: j étais tu étais il / elle / on était nous étions vous étiez ils / elles étaient. Here are a few more useful irregular roots: aller: all   to go faire: fais to do / to make avoir: av to have connaître: connaiss to be familiar with savoir: sav to know (fact or knowledge) Lets see how this would fit into the French equivalents of the sentences from the English examples I shared earlier: Pendant quelle faisait ses devoirs, son ami a appellé. Pendant que je finissais mon masters en France, Michael Jackson est mort. Pendant que tu mangeais une banane, tu a eu un éclat de rire. Pendant quil etait collegien, il nageait tous les jours. Ils visitaient le japon tous les années pendant quil était jeune. La porte de la maison était pourpre. Eloise était une fille intelligente. Well include selections for each voice type, representing a mix of both classic and modern shows! Good Audition Songs for Musicals Sopranos This Place is Mine from “Phantom” by Maury Yeston. Everyone sings from the OTHER “Phantom” don’t make that mistake! Funny divas can really sell this song. It’s as big as anything you’d find in the major hits from that era (and you know what they are!) but this song is hardly overdone. “To Keep My Love Alive” from “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” by Rodgers and Hart. So outrageously funny! This is for the soprano who’s also a comedienne. Plus, it’s always good to have some Rodgers and Hart in your repertoire! “Unexpected Song” from “Song and Dance”. This is an absolutely beautiful ballad from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s lesser-known works. You can’t go wrong with a single song in the show, in fact; it’s a one-woman show and you have a lot of great audition songs to choose from! “One More Kiss” from “Follies”. It’s not always a good idea to bring in Sondheim unless they specifically ask for it (too complicated for many accompanists), but this is a simpler tune in the style of song from an old operetta. Belters/Mezzos “How ‘Bout a Dance?”  from “ Bonnie and Clyde” by Frank Wildhorn. This is a sassy and fun song perfect for a younger actress that belts. This musical is fairly recent, but due to the fact it was not a hit well, chances are not too many other people will be walking in with this one! “Wherever He Ain’t “ from “Mack and Mabel”. What a score! This is an up-tempo, rag-timey song that is just plain fun to sing by a spunky leading lady. While “Mack and Mabel” is respected for its glorious score by Jerry Herman, this show never took off! “Home “ from “The Wiz”. This a pop-like song that builds. Memorable melody and you can really put some emotion behind it. Perfect if you’re auditioning for something like “Dreamgirls” (but again, it’s best to avoid those songs unless they specifically ask for them). “All Falls Down” from Chaplin.This song is sung by the character of Hedda Hopper in the show. It’s a real scene stealer! Another modern (2006) musical that was not a hit, but has a marvelous score (see a theme here?). “The Music That Makes Me Dance” from “Funny Girl”. We all know that Barbra owns “People” and “Don’t Rain on My Parade”, but this lesser-known ballad from the show is gorgeous and a solid choice. Tenors “A Bit of Earth” from “Secret Garden”. If you need something a little more modern that’s a moving yet simple ballad, this is a great choice. “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love” from “Finian’s Rainbow”. This is a mid-tempo song for a tenor with charm and personality, from a more “classic” show. “Seeing is Believing” from “Aspects of Love”. Another one of Sir Andrew’s flops but what a score! This may be a better choice than “Love Changes Everything” from the same show, which many performers tend to oversing. “Shiksa Goddess” from “The Last Five Years”.  This is for a comedian! A mid-tempo number from another more modern show with very clever lyrics that will leave the audition panel rolling. “You are Beautiful” from “Flower Drum Song”. Ballad for a young lyric tenor from one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s lesser known shows. Baritones “C’est Moi”- from “Camelot”. Need something classic? Are you a solid actor? This one’s for you. “Gonna Be Another Hot Day” from “110 in the Shade”.  Mid-tempo as well as lyrical, and could suit a variety of types. “I’ll Be Here”- from “The Wild Party”. Wonderful song from another more modern show for a baritone who is a bit more pop/jazz-like and comfortable with some vocal improvisation. “Love Sneaks In” from “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”. Need something current that’s also a ballad? Perfect choice! “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway”- from “Spamalot”. Perfect for the man who is an “actor first, baritone second”! Very patter-like and needs a comedian to sell it but that goes without saying, doesn’t it? After knowing your type, it’s all simply a matter of two really big things: what shows are being cast (all modern? All classic? A mix of the two?), and what YOU truly enjoy performing. There is so much out there that theres no excuse for using a song you think is just okay as an audition piece. The audition panel will always be able to tell!
